These days there are many treatments that are available to improve the appearance of the neck. They range from minimal in-office treatments having no down-time to more invasive procedures that require anesthesia and time off for recovery. Aging of the neck usually is a mixture of loose skin, muscles and some excess fat. In order to decide which one is the best for you, it is always better to consult a surgeon to address the concerns.

Know Your Goals

In order to gain a neck lift, one should be in good health. It is important to consult your surgeon in advance and have your goals set in your mind for what you want to change.

Here are some of the most common concerns that are addressed with a neck lift:

  • Excess fat
  • Turkey wattle neck
  • Too much skin

Is a Necklift for You?

The main aim of neck lift is to stiffen the excess skin from the neck and reduce wrinkling and sagging. It may also remove some fat and underlying muscles and connective tissues may also be tightened.

Important factors to be discussed with your surgeon include:

  • Skin type
  • Ethnic background
  • Your bone structure – the jaw as well as the structures below the jaw, in the neck
  • Degree of skin elasticity
  • Your medical history
  • Individual healing rate

Various treatment options may include:

  • Botox Injections – Vertical bands which extend from under our chin to the base of the neck are caused by a muscle in the neck, which is called platysma. Botox is injected into the muscle to provisionally decrease the look of these bands. It is a simple in office procedure which requires no anesthesia and resumes your normal activities.

Neck Liposuction for Fat Removal

During liposuction, surgeons make an incision below the chin and excess fat is removed. This whole procedure is done solely as a part of the neck lift or facelift. In case it is the only procedure your require, one should plan to spend around an hour undergoing the operation. The incisions done will be stitched and bandaged. The whole procedure requires anesthetic and should allow 5-10 days for recovery. It is important to follow your instructions on proper care for any stitches and bandages in the days following surgery.

Complications and Risks of Neck-lift

Skin can become numb for a few weeks after the neck lift surgery. In rare cases, the condition can be permanent. Other risks can also include scar tissue build up or bruising or puckering of the skin. With any plastic surgery, risk of complications related to infection or reaction to anesthesia may happen. It is better to avoid most complications by choosing the right plastic surgeon, followed by pre- and postoperative instructions.
