Median Nerve Palsy

Median Nerve Palsy: Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment

What is Median Nerve Palsy?

Median Nerve Palsy is a condition resulting from injury or compression of the median nerve, which controls sensation and movement in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. Damage to this nerve can cause weakness, loss of function, and difficulty performing fine motor tasks, affecting daily activities like gripping, writing, and using tools.

Our Approach to Median Nerve Palsy

At Dr. Anubhav Gupta’s practice, we specialize in the diagnosis, management, and surgical treatment of median nerve injuries. Our goal is to restore hand function, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.

We perform a detailed clinical evaluation and nerve function tests to determine the extent of nerve damage.

Early cases can be managed with physiotherapy, splinting, and medications to reduce symptoms and improve function.

In severe cases, we offer nerve repair, nerve grafting, tendon transfers, or nerve decompression surgery to restore hand function.

A structured post-treatment physiotherapy program ensures maximum recovery of strength and movement.

When to Suspect Median Nerve Palsy?

You should consider seeking medical attention if you experience:

  • Weakness in grip – Difficulty holding objects, writing, or using tools
  • Numbness & tingling – Loss of sensation in the thumb, index, middle, or ring finger
  • Thumb weakness – Inability to make a fist or perform pinching movements
  • Ape Hand Deformity – In advanced cases, the thumb lies in the same plane as the fingers due to muscle weakness
