What Are Congenital Hand Syndromes?

Congenital hand syndromes are birth-related anomalies that affect the shape, structure, or function of the hand. These conditions can impact a child’s ability to grasp, hold, and perform everyday tasks. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to ensure optimal hand function and development.

Common Congenital Hand Conditions

✔ Syndactyly (Fused Fingers) – A condition where two or more fingers are joined together by skin, soft tissue, or bone. This can be simple (only skin) or complex (involving bones and joints) and may limit finger movement.

✔ Polydactyly (Extra Fingers) – The presence of an additional finger or thumb, which may be fully developed or partially formed. It can occur on the thumb side (preaxial), pinky side (postaxial), or in the middle (central polydactyly).

✔ Thumb Duplication (Duplicated Thumb) – Also known as Preaxial Polydactyly, where a child is born with two thumbs on the same hand. The duplicated thumb may be fully developed or partially formed, causing functional challenges.
