Ulnar Nerve Palsy

Ulnar Nerve Palsy: Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment

What is Ulnar Nerve Palsy?

Ulnar Nerve Palsy occurs when the ulnar nerve, which controls movement and sensation in the ring and little fingers, becomes compressed or damaged. This condition can lead to numbness, tingling, weakness, and difficulty gripping objects, affecting everyday tasks like writing, holding utensils, or buttoning a shirt. In advanced cases, it can result in claw hand deformity, where the fingers bend abnormally.

Our Approach to Ulnar Nerve Palsy

At Dr. Anubhav Gupta’s practice, we take a patient-centered and multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating ulnar nerve injuries. Our goal is to restore hand function, alleviate discomfort, and prevent long-term complications.

A clinical examination and nerve function tests (EMG & NCS) help determine the severity of nerve involvement.

In mild to moderate cases, treatment includes splinting, anti-inflammatory medications, physiotherapy, and nerve gliding exercises.

For severe or progressive cases, we offer ulnar nerve decompression, nerve repair, or tendon transfer surgery to restore function.

A structured hand therapy program helps regain strength, coordination, and sensation.

When to Suspect Ulnar Nerve Palsy?

You should seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Weak Grip Strength – Difficulty holding objects or performing fine motor tasks
  • Numbness or Tingling – Sensation loss in the ring and little fingers
  • Claw Hand Deformity – Fingers bending in an abnormal position due to muscle weakness
  • Muscle Wasting – Noticeable thinning of muscles in the hand, especially near the thumb and palm
